The FAQ Dilemma

The June 6th, 2025 FAQ update includes a response to a chant question which boils down to what happens if you are unable to actually spend the markers to chant the battle cry. The response seems to create some fairly interesting problems within chanting that probably need to be broken down properly. I’ve copied the question and response below.

Q: When Chanting the Battlecry – if I have 1 Famine, 1 War and 1 Death Chant Marker in the
sequence and I chant the Battlecry do I gain the benefits of Regiment specific Chants even though I did not gain any Cult benefits?

A: Yes, you have Chanted the Battlecry even if you have not received a specific Cult effect
.

Before we get too deep into this we need to look at the scenario. It comes down to what happens in step 3 of chanting if you do not have 2 appropriate markers to discard. The scenario in the question comes from having 3 different markers, however, it is worth pointing out that this scenario can be generated by choosing a cult in step 2 that we do not have 2 markers for. For example if we had 3 FAMINE markers we could choose WAR and be in this same situation. There are 2 outcomes that could result from this ruling. Because the response states that we have not received a specifc cult effect option 1 seems the most likely.

OPTION 1

We have declared we are going to chant the battlecry. In step 2 of the process we choose a cult we do not have the requisite 2 markers for. When we get to step 3 of the process because we are unable to discard 2 markers matching that cult the process stops. We do not progress to step 4 where we would gain the cult benefit or step 5 where we would remove unsung markers.

In this scenario we gain the regimental [CHANT] effect simply for declaring we are chanting the battle cry even though we have failed to actually do so. This enables us to functionally always receive the regiment [CHANT] if we have 3 markers while not actually spending our markers. That would create a rather substantial buff to ranged regiments, regiments with support [CHANT]s, and some situational changes to a number of other regiments. Being able to trigger these bonuses with little to no opportunity
cost seems vaguely problematic.

OPTION 2

In option 2 the FAQ is basically just instructing use to ignore step 3 of chant the battlecry. We’d still proceed to step 4 where we gain the cult benefit and to step 5 where we remove unsung markers. This functionally makes chanting token agnostic. You have 3 tokens you get a cult benefit of your choice. While interesting to look at where this would lead chanting in general I find this scenario to be unlikely as the FAQ response does specify that a specific cult effect has not been received.

The dilemma in the title comes in when we consider how as players we utilize this ruling. This creates a lot of potential for abuse of the chanting rules that I’m pretty confident aren’t intended and hopefully it sees a review. I’ll try to update or remove this if it becomes unnecessary. As I’ve referenced the chant steps a number of times I’ll include them at the bottom.

I hope everyone has a great weekend

Chant Steps

  1. You may exchange Conquest markers for an equal number of Famine, Death, or War markers in any combination
  2. Choose a Cult
  3. Discard at least two markers of the Cult
  4. Gain the benefits of that Cult
  5. Remove any unused Chant Markers from the sequence. Markers removed in this way are considered Unsung
